‘Govt covering up tanker capsize mystery’

DHAKA: BNP vice chairman Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed on Friday alleged the government was not exposing the reasons of oil-tanker capsize in the Shela River due to involvement of one of the cabinet member’s brother-in-law with the incident.

He was reading out the findings and recommendations by the 7-member probe committee, formed by BNP to investigate into oil-tanker capsize incident in Shela River of the Sunderbans, in a press conference at party chairperson’s Gulshan political office.

Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, chief of the probe committee, also termed the incident as a man-made disaster.

The senior BNP leader further said, “This was not the first time, the government also played dirty politics during the Rana Plaza collapse.”

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, among others, was present at the press conference.

On December 9, an oil tanker, OT Southern Star 7, carrying more than 357,000 lakh litres of furnace oil, sank in the river Shela after being hit by a cargo vessel and the oil spread out in the wide area of world’s largest mangrove forest, the Sunderbans.
