DHAKA: The year ‘2014’ witnessed many groundbreaking achievements as well as some failures. Country’s situation was neither too volatile nor stable. Number of killings often drew media’s attention.
Sometimes international media was curious to know what was going on inside Bangladesh. Murder of a professor at Rajshahi University and gruesome Narayanganj 7-murder allegedly committed by elite force Rapid Action Battalion are a few to mention, which created sensation home and abroad.
Banglanews.com looked back to just -passed year ‘2014’ and brought a list of the major killing incidences throughout 2014 to its readers. Here is our list;
Narayanganj 7-murder 
Member of elite force Rapid Action Battalion abducted Narayanganj City Corporation Panel Mayor Nazrul Islam, his three aides and driver and senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and his driver from Dhaka-Narayanganj link road on April 27 and killed them.
Three days later, six bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River on April 30. The seventh was recovered the following day.
BGB man killed by Myanmar Border Police 
Myanmar Border Police (BGP), formerly NASAKA, shot Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) nayek Mizanur Rahman dead in Panchhari border under Naikhonchhari uazila of Bandarban district on May 28. BGP then intruded into Bangladesh territory to drag the body.
Two days later, BGP attacked a BGB team when they are looking for Mizanur near 52-international pillar of the border on May 30, triggering a gun battle. Following the day, BGP returned the body.
RU Prof Shafiul hacked dead
Miscreants hacked Professor Dr AKM Shafiul Islam of Sociology Department at Rajshahi University (RU) to death in front of his residence in Chaddapai area, adjacent to RU campus on his way home riding a motorcycle on November 15.
Faruqi-murder in city 
Miscreants hacked private television station Channel-I Islamic program moderator Maulana Nurul Islam Faruqi to death at his East Razabazar residence in city on August 27.
Victim’s son Faisal Faruqi filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Thana against unnamed eight-nine person
Mirpur fire burns 10 alive 
10 ten people, including four of a family, were burnt alive when two groups of Bihari, stranded Pakistani, locked into clashes at Kalshi in city’s Pallabi area on June 14 over blasting fireworks on the occasion of the holy Shab-e-Barat.
Six cases were filed separately over the killing incidents. But police made no mentionable progress in investigation.
Mortar shell blast claims 6 Army, BGB lives
Two personnel of Bangladesh Army and three of BGB were killed when a powerful mortar shell exploded in Maidhairchala army firing range of Ghatail Cantonment in Ghatail upazila of Tangail district on February 12 during a training session.
A day later, another BGB man succumbed to his injures, rising death toll to six.
Ekramul-murder in Feni
Allude to cinematic style, miscreants intercepted private car of Fulgazi upazila chairman Ekramul Haque, shot on his chest and burnt him alive inside the vehicle in front of Bilashi Cinema in Academy area of the district town on May 20, and fled the scene.
The killing of Ekramul, who was also then-upazila Awami League president, created sensation across the country.
Moghbazar triple murder
Miscreants shot dead three people, including a woman, of a family, storming into their house at Sonalibagh in Moghbazar area of the city on August 27 following a dispute over a land grabbing with the local hooligans.
A killing case was filed making a local terrorist Kala Babu prime accused. Babu was killed in a gunfight with police on September 15.
Khulna gunfight kills 13 robbers
Thirteen robbers of ‘Kashem Bahini’ including the ringleader were killed in a gunfight with police in Deluti village in Paikgachha Upazila of the district on October 5, bringing peace to people’s live in the area, adjacent to Sundarbans.
Keraniganj-4 killing for looted money
A robber gang killed four people - a couple and their two kids - in Kadampur area under South Keraniganj, on the outskirts of capital September 24 following disputes over looted money distribution and extra marital affairs.
Week later, police arrested mastermind of the murder with several others. The arrestee had confessed the killings. They are now staying behind bar as per court order.
Tangail stalkers burn mom, 3 daughters alive
Angered over refusal, stalkers torched house of a Malaysia-expatriate pouring 65 liters petrol in Dakkhin Sohagpara village under Mirzapur upazila of the district on October 8, burning his wife and their three daughters alive while asleep.
Khagrachhari blast kills 2 BGB men
Two BGB members were killed when a grenade exploded accidentally during training session at Khagrachhari cantonment on November 16.
4 of a family slain in Mynensingh
Miscreants killed four people of a family inside their house at Lobonkota village in Bhaluka upazila of the district on December 16.
