DHAKA: A Dhaka court on Thursday extended time for about two months more for Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to further investigation into General Manzoor murder case and ordered to submit the report on March 12.
The court of Additional district and session judge-1 SM Saiful Islam passed the order, in response to the plea for more time filed by investigation officer of the case and also CID special superintendent of police (SP) Abdul Kahhar Akanda.
The CID was scheduled to submit its further investigation report on Thursday, but failed to complete the enquiry.
However, the main accused of the case HM Ershad, also Jatiya Party Chairman, did not appear before the court. But lawyer Sheikh Sirajul Islam was present on behalf of Ershad.
Another two accused Major (retd) Kazi Emdadul Haque and Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Mostafa Kamaluddin Bhuiyan attended.
As per High Court order, the trial proceedings of the case against Major General (retd) Abdul Latif and Lieutenant Colonel (retd) Shamsur Rahman Shams remained postponed.
On February 10 last year, the verdict was scheduled to be delivered but the newly appointed Judge Khandaker Hasan M Firoz in place of Judge Hosne Ara Akhter decided for fresh hearing of the case and fixed February 27 as hearing date.
Major General Manzoor was killed on June 1, 1981 in Chittagong cantonment, just two days within the assassination of the then President Ziaur Rahman.
On February 28, 1995, after 14 years of the murder, deceased’s elder brother Advocate Abul Mansur Ahmed filed a killing case with Panchlaish Thana of the port city.
Before Khandaker Hasan M Firoz, judges were changed in the case for 22 times in the last 19 years.
