Local people complete rescue work in trawlers collision

GAZIPUR: The divers of fire service did not come to rescue the passengers who drowned after two trawlers collided off the estuary of Brahmaputra and Sitalakkya rivers in Sreepur upazila of the district Friday noon.

The divers did not come as the law enforcers failed to locate which thana police should lead the rescue work.

Later, local people, using their fishing nets, completed rescuing the passengers.

Locals claimed that four people drowned. However, the law enforcers claimed two bodies were recovered and one person was missing in the incident.

The trawlers collided off the estuary of Brahmaputra and Sitalakkya rivers which was on the boundary of three thanas, Sreepur and Kapasia of Gazipur district and Pagla Thana of Mymensingh district.

The rescue operation was failed to start on time as the authorities of three thanas said the area belongs to another thana.

The relatives of victims took the bodies as no law enforcing agency personnel were present there at that time.

Mohsinul Kader, Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Thana said they helped in rescue operation although the place incident was under the Kapasia Thana area.

Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia Thana Ahsan Ullah said that the Pagla Thana authorities will take the initiatives as the place is under that thana.

Officer-in-Charge of Pagla Thana said that the Gazipur district authorities will take initiatives as the place belongs to them.
