Signal 3 at seaports as Bay depression weakens after landfall

The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the coast and weakened into a land depression, prompting Bangladesh to issue a level-three local warning for all maritime ports amid fears of strong winds and rough seas.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department issued the forecast on Saturday (27 Sept).

Meteorologist Md. Tariful Newaz Kabir said the depression, which had been lying over the north-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central waters near the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast, moved westward and made landfall around 6 am It is now positioned over southern Odisha and adjacent areas as a land depression.

The system is expected to continue moving westward and gradually lose strength.

However, its influence is creating significant pressure differences over the northern Bay, raising the risk of squally and gusty winds sweeping across the region, including Bangladesh’s coastal belt and maritime ports.

Authorities have instructed the ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra to hoist local warning signal No. 3.

Fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay have been advised to remain close to shore and exercise caution until further notice.
