DHAKA: James K. Stewart, Deputy Prosecutor of International Criminal Court (ICC), appreciated Bangladesh’s enhanced engagement with the International Criminal Court (ICC) as a State Party to the Rome Statute.

The visiting ICC prosecutor made a call on Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP at the latter’s office Sunday

He also expressed his wish to work together to further sensitize young people in particular about what the Court does and how it functions. 

James K. Stewart is currently on a visit to Bangladesh at the invitation of the Government as part of a public information campaign about the ICC’s role in prevention of and ensuring justice for mass atrocity crimes such as genocides, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression. 

Foreign Minister Ali reiterated country’s commitment to promote the universalization of the Rome Statute on the International Criminal Court. 

He thanked the ICC Deputy Prosecutor for offering to address a group of students at Dhaka University as part of other outreach programmes. 

The ICC Deputy Prosecutor briefed the Bangladesh Foreign Minister about some of the recent initiatives to further strengthen ICC’s mandate and service delivery mechanisms. 

They exchanged views on Bangladesh’s possible cooperation in promoting the “Policy Paper on Sexual and Gender Based Crimes” recently launched by the ICC Prosecutor. 

The ICC Deputy Prosecutor also had a meeting with the Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque.
