Robber killed in Sundarbans ‘gunfight’

KHULNA: A robber was killed in an alleged gunfight with police members in Hansrajer Char area in Kaira upazila of Sundarbans early Thursday.

The deceased was identified as Hasan Ali Sana, 30, second-in-command of forest robbers gang ‘Ranga Bahini’ and son of Halim Sana of Kaira upazila.

Officer-in-charge (OC) TM Rokonuzzaman of District Detective Branch (DB) of Police confirmed the matter to banglanews.

He said, being tipped off, the Kaira Thana law enforcers conducted a drive in the area around 9:30pm Wednesday and arrested Hasan from Gabura area of Shaymnagar.

After interrogation, police took Hasan to the Hansrajer Char area to recover arms around 4:00am where his fellows opened fire targeting police.

For self defense, police also responded the bullet attack where the second-in-command shot dead and three police personnel including assistant sub-inspector injured.

At one stage, the robbers left the spot and the law enforcers recovered the body of Hasan.

Police also seized a foreign-made pistol, three pipe gun and 10-rounds of bullet from the spot.

However, there are five cases against Hasan in different Thanas, the OC added.
