Bangladesh envoy meets Thai mass grave survivors

DHAKA: Bangladesh Ambassador in Bangkok Saida Muna Tasneem met two Bangladeshi survivors -- an adult and a minor-- from a mass grave in Sadao district of the province, said a press release on Friday.

The release added that the ambassador arrived Thailand southern province Songkla Thursday night after a five-day public holiday in the country to meet and interview the two survivors who are undergoing treatment at a hospital in police protection.

The visit is first of its kind by any high officials from Bangladesh government to assess the situation of human trafficking networks in the province that lured Bangladeshis to travel the risky sea route to enter Malaysia and Thailand, according to the release.

The ambassador was also scheduled to meet the governor, and the head of police of the province to collect first hand information on the Bangladeshi nationals. She is also set to exchange views on the issue of cooperation with the authorities concerned to combat the trafficking syndicates of the regions.

According to the release issued by Bangladesh Embassy Bangkok, a two-member consular team of the Embassy and an officer of Thai Foreign Ministry are giving company to Saida during the visit.

Two Bangladeshis survived in a mass grave that was discovered in southern Thailand and was being treated at a hospital in nearby Padang Besar.

Earlier, more than 30 bodies were discovered in several graves at abandoned jungle camps of human traffickers in Padang Besar in Sadao district of Songkhla on May 1 and in Takua Pa district of Phangnga province on May 5.
