IS releases 2 Bangladeshis in Libya

DHAKA: Two Bangladeshi migrant workers, abducted by Islamic State militants from a Libyan oil field on March 6, were freed on Tuesday (March 24).

The foreign ministry issued a press release regarding the release of two Bangladeshis.

It said that Bangladesh Embassy in Libya confirmed the release of Helal Uddin, 40, and Mohammad Anwar Hossain, 38, both employees of Vienna-based oil company VAOS.

The release further said the Bangladeshi workers were under treatment at Sirte hospital, about 700 km from Tripoli, and their physical condition was normal.

The two are expected to be brought to their employer’s office in Tripoli on Wednesday.

Helal hailed from Madarganj Upazila in Jamalpur and Anwar from Gayeshpur village in Noakhali.

The two Bangladeshis were released following the initiatives and constant efforts of the foreign ministry and the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya.

On March 9, a press statement issued by the foreign ministry that said terrorist group ISIS abducted two Bangladeshis along with seven other foreigners that include four Filipinos, an Austrian, a Czech and a Ghanaian from the Al-Ghani oil field in Libya on March 6.
