DHAKA: A Dhaka court Monday sentenced seven persons to death and another person to life imprisonment for killing Swechhasebok League leader Monir Uddin Manu in capital’s Mirpur area.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 judge ABM Nizamul Haque passed the verdict this morning.

Death row convict are Shahdat Hossian, Mahmudur Rahman Sohel, Hasan Sarwar Juku, Masudur Rahman Tota, Nuruzzaman Lucus and Bashar alias TBS Babu.

The court sentenced Jahanara to life imprisonment as well as fined Tk20,000.

According to case statement, armed criminals shot Monir Uddin Manu to death in front of his residence after a function marking Bangabandhu’s death anniversary on August 15, 2006 demanding extortion of Tk 1 crore.

Later, a murder case was filed with Mirpur Thana accusing the eight persons.

On October 30, 2007, AKM Nasirullah, Investigation Officer of the case, submitted charge sheet against the accused.
