DHAKA: State minister for home Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal on Thursday said the government is set to enhance efficiency of police department so that the department can perform in a more professional manner.
The state minister also said the number of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel will also be increased to enhance surveillance in the border.
He disclosed the matter in a discussion organized by Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters’ Forum (BSRF) at the secretariat at noon.
BSRF president Shymal Sarker presided over the program.
Kamal said police are friends of people. The way they thwarted the 92-day violence committed by BNP-Jamaat alliance since January this year substantiates the department’s friendship with people.
He also said the government was taking steps to increase police’s competence by providing training so that they can act efficiently to ensure people’s security.
Mentioning that there will be ‘enough’ allocation for police in the upcoming national budget, he said “this is not security expenditure, this is an investment”.
The ratio of people and police in Bangladesh is 1025:1 while the ratio in India is 600:1 and in developed countries is 400:1.
He also said a medical college with modern facilities will be established for the police department so that no member of the department needs to visit foreign countries for treatment.
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal also said the government has taken steps to set up fire service in every upazila.
Besides, some 28,000 volunteers were prepared to face earthquake related disaster, he added.
