7,000 Bangladeshis in foreign jails

FROM JATIYA SANGSAD: Foreign minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali stated that at least 7,000 Bangladesh nationals are in jails of different countries.

He came up with this statement while responding to a star mark question in the Parliament Tuesday afternoon.

Number of the imprisoned Bangladeshis has been changing day by day and till now at least 7,000 people are in detention in different countries, he said.

The ministry always takes measures to repatriate Bangladeshis including jailed persons, he added.

According to the minister, the Bangladeshi missions abroad also have been working with the respective governments in this regard.

While answering another query of ruling Awami League lawmaker Begum Sanjida Khanam, the minister said some Rohingas have been living and working in mid-east countries using Bangladeshi passports.

So, the Bangladeshi missions are in alert position in renewing passports and providing other consulate services, he said.

Legal action will be taken if the missions proved that Rohinga people are using Bangladeshi passport, the minister opined.
