Mujahid to file review petition

DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami leader Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid will submit a review petition of the Appellate Division verdict that upheld death penalty to the war criminal.

Mujahid’s chief lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain made the disclosure immediately after the Supreme Court Appellate Division had upheld the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-2 verdict for his crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh in 1971.

While talking to journalists, Mahbub Hossain said they would submit a review petition of the Tuesday’s verdict handed down by the Appellate Division.

He however mentioned that the Appellate Division partially accepted their petition.

Earlier around 9:00am, the four-member Appellate Division led by Chief Justice SK Sinha upheld his death sentence.

Other members of the bench were Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, and Justice Hassan Foyez Siddique.

On July 17 in 2013, the ICT-2 sentenced the Jamaat leader to death in connection with three charges, jailed him for life in one and sentenced him to five years in prison in another charge.

Later on August 11, Mujahid filed the appeal with the apex court challenging the death penalty.

The state, however, did not appeal as Mujahid was awarded capital punishment.
