DHAKA: EU ambassador to Bangladesh Pierre Mayaudon underscored the need to secure a fair, ambitious and legally binding new international climate agreement.
He came up with this remark as the delegation of the European Union and member states celebrating the EU-Bangladesh Climate Diplomacy Day in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The event was organized in collaboration with environment and forests ministry and Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF).
The day hosted a multi-stakeholder Climate Dialogue to highlight the importance and benefits of enhancing climate action in all countries and reaching a new international climate deal in Paris later this year.
EU ambassador Pierre Mayaudon said, ‘2015 is a decisive year for climate negotiations. Serious risks are associated to climate change, a swift transition to a low carbon future offers numerous opportunities.’
‘The sooner we act together, the greater the benefit,’ he added.
Environment and forests ministry secretary Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed highlighted the importance of the partnership of the EU delegation and member states with Bangladesh government for sustained mitigation and effective adaptation actions in the country.
Moreover, a photo exhibition was unveiled showcasing some of the best joint EU-Bangladesh climate finance projects.
An award giving ceremony was also hosted for the winners of a Youth Photo Contest.
Several ambassadors of EU countries, government officials, diplomatic missions, international organizations as well as representatives from civil society, private sector, research organizations, youth and the media were present in the program.
