DHAKA: Cabinet approved an act with a provision that said permission from the government will be required to arrest government employees before accepting chargesheet against them in any criminal case.
The approval in principle of the draft of ‘Government Employee Act, 2015’ came from a meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Monday.
Cabinet secretary Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan told journalists, ‘It is remarkable step’.
In response to a question regarding the act, he said relevant organization could investigate and file cases against the government officials if there was any accusation about discharging their duties.
But, government permission will be needed if it becomes necessary to arrest any government employee before submitting chargesheet, he added.
The cabinet secretary further said the act was not providing any undue benefits to the government employees that collide with the Constitution and the regulations of Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
Some rules will be introduced in 10 sectors such as appointment, promotion, leave, carrier planning, skill development, higher education and training and so on to make the act effective, cabinet secretary added.
However, the draft act will again be presented in the cabinet for final approval after vetting by the law ministry, the cabinet secretary added.
