Chittagong traffic system being modernized

CHITTAGONG: Chittagong City Corporation is going to modernize the traffic system of the port city after long 21 years of some patchwork.

"To improve the traffic system automatic and modern signal lamps are being set up at cost of Tk 3.5 crore," a competent source said.

The City Corporation has already begun work at different points of the city to modernize the outworn traffic system as per working direction of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

Sources said CCC set up signal light posts and lamps first in 1989, and since then, no reconstruction works had been initiated during this long time.

Most of them were damaged due to cataclysmic rain on June 11 in 2007, sources added.

CMP Deputy Commissioner (traffic) Faruk Ahmed said replacing the old hand-operated and malfunctioning traffic signals automated ones would be installed to ease the traffic congestion in the port city.
