Bangladesh team visits nuclear plant reactors

DHAKA: Bangladesh delegation, led by Minister of State for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman, visited the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.

High-level delegates led by the minister visited the KKNPP reactors, as Russia’s Atomstroyexports has constructed two 1,000 MWe reactors and planned to construct four more units with similar capacity, reports the Hindu.

Bangladesh intends to construct 1,200 MWe VVER nuclear reactors with Russian assistance on turnkey basis.

KKNPP Site Director R.S. Sundar took the delegates around the upcoming nuclear park and explained in detail the safety features incorporated in nuclear reactors.

The delegates were also taken to the desalination plant, dyke and other areas.

Science and Technology Secretary Serajul Haq Khan, Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Director Mohamed Shawkat Akbar and experts from six associated fields including oceanography accompanied the minister during the visit.

The team, after their overnight stay at KKNPP’s Anu Vijay Township, is likely to leave for the next destination via Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday morning.
