No IS in Bangladesh: RAB DG

KHULNA: Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) director general Benazir Ahmed on Monday categorically said that there is no existence of Islamic State (IS) in the country.

He further alleged that a vested quarter, as part of its far-reaching conspiracy against Bangladesh, has been spreading false alarms through social media saying about the existence of the extremist outfit here.

RAB DG came up with the observations while exchanging views with the journalists at Khulna circuit house in the noon.

‘These views are mainly being propagated by two groups on Facebook,’ he alleged.

Benazir Ahmed said they found out two extremist outfits, namely, Al Hikma and Hamja Brigade adding that the law enforcers detained 57 members of extremist outfits and 109 of other affiliated organizations since January to October this year.

‘Two alleged groups of so-called IS came to Bangladesh from the UK and India but we detained them. Except this, there is no evidence of IS activities in Bangladesh,” he added.

The director general of country’s elite force also alleged that eight sensational murders, in past six weeks, were done in a planned way to spread panic among the mass and create chaos here.

He further said law enforcing agencies have also been working to thwart all such situation for a long.

In response to a question about giving orders to law enforcers to open fire to defend themselves or to stop an imminent threat to life of others and state properties, the RAB DG said that the duties of law enforcers are clearly written in the guidelines.

He also said about taking stern punitive actions for violation of the guidelines.

Divisional commissioner Abdus Samad, Khulna range DIG SM Monir-uz-Zaman, Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) commissioner Nibas Chandra Majhi, RAB-6 commander Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, police superintendent Habibur Rahman, and RAB and KMP high-ups also were present here.
