BRAHMANBARIA: A suspected robber was shot dead in a “gunfight” between police and a “robbery gang” in Kasba upazila of Brahmanbaria early Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Shakib Uddin alias Malu, hailed from Morapukurpar village of the Kasba upazila.
Police recovered a pipe gun, five rounds of bullets, two knives and two masks from the spot. During the gunfight, two police officials sustained injuries.
Kasba Thana officer-in-charge (OC) Mohiuddin said a team of police was patrolling in Kharera area on the Comilla-Sylhet highway around 2:00am. A gang of robbers intercepted microbus of patrol police, putting tree log on highway.
Sensing presence of the robbers, police opened fire on it and robbers also retaliated with gunshots, leaving Kasba Thana assistant sub inspector (ASI) M Faruk Mia and Constable Ashikul Islam injured.
Cops later found Shakib lying injured on the scene. He was sent to District Sadar Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead.
Injured police officials were given treatment at Kasba Upazila Health Complex.
