The High Court today (Nov 7) granted three weeks' anticipatory bail to three pro-BNP lawyers in the case regarding the attack on the official residence of the chief justice during the BNP's grand rally on October 28.

The three lawyers are Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury.

The High Court Bench of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Bashir Ullah passed the order after three lawyers surrendered in the court seeking bail.

The court granted three weeks anticipatory bail to three Bangladesh Nationalist Party backed lawyers.

The court also asked the lawyers to surrender before the judicial court on expiry of anticipatory bail.

Earlier on October 28, the BNP staged a mass rally in Nayapaltan to press for the formation of a non-partisan caretaker government during the election period.

Later on the day, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir suspended the grand rally in the capital's Nayapaltan and announced the hartal.

BNP claimed that the rally was suspended as police fired rubber bullets, flash grenades and lobbed tear gas shells, forcing the BNP leaders and activists to leave the rally venue.

On that day, a police box and an ambulance in the police hospital were torched, while a dozen of vehicles were set ablaze.

Besides, the chief justice's residence also came under attack.

A police officer was beaten to death and a Jubo Dal activist was also killed.

Later, police filed a case against 59 individuals from the BNP, including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and others.

BNP, Jamaat and like-minded parties observed the dawn to dusk countrywide hartal on October 29 in protest of the recent police action during the party's Nayapaltan rally.
