DHAKA: In the first phase of upazila elections around the country, BNP-backed candidates showed better position than the ruling Awami League supported candidates.

In 88 upazilas out of 97, BNP-backed candidates won in 38 upazilas whereas AL candidates won in 33 upazilas.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami supported candidates won in 11 upazilas, Jatiya Party, Jana Sanghati Samiti (JSS), United People`s Democratic Front (UPDF) won in one upazila each.

Independent candidates won in three upazilas so far.
