A court in Chandpur has ordered five former Union Parishad (UP) chairmen and Awami League leaders to be sent to jail in connection with a violence case filed over the August 4 incident last year.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Muntasir Ahmed rejected their plea and ordered them to be sent to jail after the accused sought bail at the court on Tuesday (March 18) afternoon.
The former UP chairmen are - Md. Billal Hossain Patwari of Ashikati Union (No. 2), Masudur Rahman Nantu of Shahmahmudpur Union (No. 4), Nurul Islam Patwari of Moishadi Union (No. 6), Rafiqulla Patwari of Balia Union (No. 9), and Chhattar Radhi of Hanachar Union (No. 13).
Earlier, the five former chairmen had appeared at the Senior District and Sessions Judge Court to submit their High Court bail documents related to Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station cases GR 585, 579, and 571, which were filed after a student protest.
However, they were arrested in front of the court and handed over to the police.
Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Bahar Mia confirmed the matter.
He said that the five were arrested in connection with case number 630, which was filed over an attack on students and protesters at Chandpur Bus Stand on August 4. The case was lodged on October 18 last year by plaintiff Al-Amin Hossain.
