Youth and Sports adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan has paid tribute to Shahriar Alam Samya, describing him as a "rebellious yet incredibly polite young man" in the wake of his tragic murder near Suhrawardy Udyan.
In a heartfelt message on Facebook, the adviser recalled Samya’s active role in student movements, particularly his stand against injustice and dedication to campus activism since 2019.
“Samya was always there, fighting against guest room torture or any reasonable demand for students. He and Mashiur Amin Shuvo were inseparable,” he wrote, expressing grief over his untimely death.
The adviser emphasized the need for swift justice, revealing that three suspects had already been arrested in connection with the murder.
Asif also criticized the criminal activities plaguing Suhrawardy Udyan, calling for urgent measures to make the area safe from drug gangs and illegal operations.
“Suhrawardy Udyan should be a place of comfort, not terror,” he stated, pledging to work with Dhaka University, the Ministry of Public Works, and law enforcement to improve security.
Samya, a master’s student in the Department of Education and Research, was also the literature and publication secretary of the Sir AF Rahman Hall unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. His home was in Ullapara, Sirajganj.
He was fatally stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan’s open stage around midnight on Tuesday (May 13). He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
