A Dhaka court today placed former Narail-1 lawmaker Kabirul Haque Mukti and Awami League central committee member Md Mozammel Haque on a six-day remand each in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The two leaders were produced before the court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), where police sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. Defense lawyers filed bail petitions and opposed the remand plea.
After hearing both sides, Metropolitan Magistrate Juwel Rana, on behalf of the CMM, rejected the bail petitions and granted a six-day remand for each accused.
Mukti, also vice-president of Narail Zila Awami League, and Mozammel Haque were arrested from the capital’s Niketon area around 9 pm on Wednesday in connection with a case filed with Gulshan Police Station.
According to the case statement, the two leaders, along with their accomplices, had gathered on a bridge near Dr Fazle Rabbi Park in Gulshan on September 12, where they brought out an anti-government procession. They allegedly chanted anti-government slogans and attempted to damage passing vehicles, creating panic among the public.
