SC verdict on Jamaat’s appeal over EC registration on June 1

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed June 1 as the date for its verdict on Jamaat-e-Islami’s appeal against a High Court ruling that canceled the party’s registration with the Election Commission (EC).

A four-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, set the date after concluding the appeal hearing today (May 14).

The High Court had revoked Jamaat’s registration on August 1, 2013, following a writ petition filed on January 25, 2009 by Syed Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, secretary general of the Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, along with 24 others.

Subsequently, the Election Commission officially canceled Jamaat’s registration in October 2018, ahead of the 11th national elections.

Jamaat later challenged the High Court’s ruling, filing an appeal with the Appellate Division, which commenced hearings on December 3 last year.

During today’s proceedings, Barrister Ehsan A Siddiq and Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir represented Jamaat, while Advocate Touhidul Islam appeared on behalf of the Election Commission.
