EC to sue Ershad

DHAKA: The Election Commission (EC) is going to file a lawsuit against Jatiya Party chairman, also Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s special envoy HM Ershad MP.

Deputy Commissioner of Lalmonirhat district Habibur Rahman, also returning officer, said the case would be filed as Ershad did not submit his election expenditure in time.

“We have enough spare time to file a case. This is why next steps would be taken in case of his failure to provide logical explanations of why he did not submit the report in time,” he added.

In the 10th general elections, Ershad submitted nomination papers as MP candidate from Rangpur-3, Lalmonirhat-1 and Dhaka-17 constituencies, of which he withdrew from Dhaka-17.

Later, he was elected from Rangpur-3 and submitted his expenses in that constituency as Tk 38,500, but did not submit his expenses in Lalmonirhat-1.

Election Commissioner M Abu Hafiz told banglanews that EC will take immediate actions against those who did not submit election expenses in time.

At least 50 MP candidates of 9th Parliament were sued by EC for not submitting election expenses.

According to prevailing laws, candidates can be sentenced to two to seven years of imprisonment for not submitting election expenses in time.
