DHAKA: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fixed April 5 to hear the review petition filed challenging the death penalty for war crimes convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.

A 4-member full bench of Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha on Wednesday fixed the date for the review hearing.

The other members include Justice Abdul Wahab Mia, Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury.

The appellate division granted four more days to the defense lawyers for review hearing in response to a petition filed by Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, chief lawyer of Kamaruzzaman.

Earlier, Khandaker Mahbub sought more time for the hearings on ground of his illness.

Attorney general Mahbube Alam stood for the state.

Earlier, the hearing on the review petition filed challenging the death penalty for war crimes convict Muhammad Kamaruzzaman had came to March 9’s cause list of the Appellate Division.

The SC deferred the hearing till April 1 in response to a time petition filed by defense lawyers.
 
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Kamaruzzaman to death on May 9, 2013 for his crimes against humanity in 1971 liberation war.

In response to his petition against the ICT verdict, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence on November 3 last year while the full text of the judgment was released on February 18.

The tribunal issued a warrant to execute the death sentence of Kamaruzzaman the following day.
