BNP-Jamaat men among 207 held in 7 dists

DHAKA:  Law enforcers, in anti-sabotage drives, detained 207 people, including 53 activists of BNP and its key ally Jamaat-e-Islami, at different places in the four districts apprehending sabotages amid hartal-blockade.

In Jessore: Police, in nightlong drives, rounded up 61 accused, including an activist of BNP, from eight upazilas of the district.

District police control room sources said the detainees were accused in different case and will be produced before court Wednesday afternoon.

In Dhaka, police detained 13 activists of front organizations of BNP in front of its central office in Nayapaltan area on Wednesday morning, said BNP assistant office secretary Asadul Karim Shaheen.

In Chittagong, four BNP and Jamaat-Shibir men were detained from Sitakunda and Lohagara upazilas of the district for their alleged involvement in sabotages, said Mohammad Naimul Hasan, additional superintendent of police (Special Branch).

In Manikganj: Police detained six activists of BNP from Sadar and Singair upazilas early Wednesday apprehending subversive activities.

Abdul Baten, Sub-Inspector of District police (Special Branch), told banglanews that legal actions are being taken against the detainees.

In Satkhira, 32 people including five BNP men were arrested in drives from Tuesday night to 11:00am Wednesday in several areas of the district.

Officer-in-Charge (OC, Special Branch) of the district police Sheikh Emdad Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Gaibandha, police arrested five BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists among 23 people from several areas of the district till Wednesday morning from previous night.

District Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.

In Rangpur, 68 people including 19 Jamaat-e-Islami men were arrested from eight areas including the metropolitan area in drives till Wednesday noon.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rangpur Detective Branch of Police Shariful Islam said they are accused in several cases including torching, sabotage, vandalism and murder.
