DHAKA: Election Commission (EC) would take actions for obstructing BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Sunday during her election campaigns for Dhaka city corporations if it receives any complaints.
EC secretary Sirajul Islam came up with the observation in a press conference at its media center in the afternoon.
A group of people showed black flags obstructing the BNP chief’s motorcade while she was campaigning at Pink City of Gulshan-2 area in city on Sunday (April 19).
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayoral candidate Tabith Awal told this to media Monday noon.
Regarding the matter, Sirajul Islam said, “We will take steps if we receive any complaints of obstructing campaign.”
Meanwhile, BNP alleged that the motorcade of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia came under attack during poll campaigns for Dhaka city corporations at Karwanbazar in city Monday afternoon.
According to section 6 of election code of conduct, none can obstruct any kind of election campaign of the opposition.
The EC can sentence a six-month jail or fine Tk 50,000 or both for such act. Besides, it can cancel the candidacy for breaching code of conduct.
However, EC arranged the press conference to declare schedule of by-polls for Magura-1 constituency. The election is set be held on May 30.
