DHAKA: BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam boycotted the election raising allegation of vote rigging.
Manjur, the adviser of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, also declared quitting politics.
He came up with the announcement at his main election office in port city’s Dewanhat area at 11:15am.
Manjur Alam claimed that Awami League cadres have occupied the 80 percent polling centres of Chittagong. There is no environment of fair voting.
“Our agents were not allowed to enter the polling station. The ruling party men have attacked my supporters in different areas. So was forced to boycott the elections,” he explained.
Declaring quit of politics, Manjur said, "I will not do politics. I will pay more attention in Social work.”
City BNP president and Manjur’s chief election agent Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, " We have boycotted the election protesting occupation of polling stations, vote rigging and widespread irregularities. '
BNP vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman was also present there.
