DHAKA: Due to questions over impeccability of voter list, Bangladesh Bar Council authorities shifted the date of its elections from May 20 to May 27.
Council secretary Mohammad Altaf Hossain confirmed the matter to banglanews.
He further said five lawyers including Bar Council vice-chairman candidate Barrister Tania Amir, daughter of Barrister Amir-Ul Islam and Syed Rezaur Rahman requested the association to reschedule the poll’s date.
“Later, an emergency meeting was held on Tuesday night and a decision was taken to reschedule the date,” he added.
Attorney General Mahbubey Alam presided over the meeting, attended by 13 elected members including council vice-chairman Khandaker Mahbub Hossain.
On April 29, a total of 101 lawyers sent letters to council chairman and secretary mentioning blurriness and recurrence of names in the voter list.
They also alleged that the list was prepared based on the lists sent by several lawyers associations without considering the council’s own documents.
A total of 14 members will be elected in the Bar Council elections. Out of them, certified lawyers from all over the country will elect seven in general categories and seven others will be elected by seven local lawyers associations.
These 14 members elect the vice-chairman of the council while attorney general acts as chairman.
