DHAKA: The appellate division of the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the HC order that granted bail to BNP leader Tariqul Islam in four cases filed for sabotages during this year’s blockade-hartals.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order on Monday after hearing a petition seeking stay on HC order that granted bail to the four leaders in 56 sabotage cases.
The apex court also asked three other BNP leaders to surrender before a lower court within a week over separate cases.
The three leaders include BNP standing committee member MK Anwar, BNP chairperson’s Abdul Awal Mintoo and Joint secretary general Amanullah Aman.
Earlier on July 9, the High Court granted bail to BNP leaders MK Anwar, Tariqul Islam, Abdul Awal Mintoo and Amanullah Aman in a number of cases.
Of them, MK Anwar secured bail in nine cases, Tariqul Islam in four cases, Mintoo in one case while Aman received bail in 42 cases.
On July 14, state filed a petition seeking stay of HC order.
Later on July 21, vacation bench of chamber judge Syed Mahmud Hossain sent the petition to full bench of the appellate division.
