‘BNP spread panic over municipal polls’

DHAKA: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political affairs adviser HT Imam alleged that BNP has spread panic and created violence in the municipal polls.

He made this allegation by submitting a written complaint to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad around 3:45pm on Wednesday.

While talking to journalists afterwards, Imam said BNP tried to make the EC controversial by spreading panic and creating violence to capture polling centers in as many as 18 municipalities.

He further said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam’s brother was a candidate in Thakurgaon municipality. “His followers took control of some polling centers and rigged votes for him fearing losing here,” he added.

Besides, they created panic in Kalia, Patharghata, Durgapur, Faridganj, Hajiganj, Bhuapur, Minrampur, Chandnaish, Nalitabari, Bagharpara, Chatmohar, Bhaluka, Sarishabari, Madhabdi, Sitakundu, Gangni, Mohammadpur and Naklachhara municipalities during the voting.

He, however, said that violence in 18 out of 234 municipalities cannot smear the overall peaceful environment that was seen during the voting.
