BNP rejects municipal poll results

DHAKA: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday rejected the unofficial results of municipal elections, raising allegation of snatching victory of its party candidates.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir cleared the party’s stance at a post-poll press briefing at chairperson political office in city’s Gulshan area this morning.

He alleged that victory of BNP candidates has been snatched by creating administrative pressure through making a fearful environment.

Besides, the BNP spokesperson demanded quick resignation of the Election Commission (EC) for its failure of holding a free and fair election.

Mirza Fakhrul said the EC significantly failed to discharge its constitutional duty. It also ignored the opposition’s demand of army deployment.

In the first ever-partisan municipal election, voting in 234 municipalities across the country was held on Wednesday (December 30) amid sporadic incidents.

Ruling Awami League (AL) candidates won 177 mayoral posts while BNP candidates bagged 22, Awami League rebel candidates 18, Jatiya Party (JP) one and others nine as the unofficial polls results of 227 municipalities announced on Wednesday night.

However, independent candidates won 25 mayoral posts.
