Jamaat observes countrywide hartal

DHAKA: Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh observed countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal on Wednesday (March 9) protesting the Supreme Court verdict that upheld death penalty to war criminal Mir Quasem Ali.

From different spots of the city, Banglanews correspondents reported that the number of private cars, microbus and public buses and human haulers were fewer in the earlier hours.

The number, however, increased as the time progressed. Later, there was no sign of shutdown.

Besides, no picketing, procession of Jamaat-e-islami or its student wing was not reported from elsewhere in the country.

However, two buses were set afire at Savar in the morning. There was no passenger in the buses.

Hours after the apex court verdict on Tuesday (March 8), the party called the shutdown for Wednesday (March 9) demanding release of all of its leaders, detained on charge of war crimes.

Earlier, SC Appellate Division upheld the death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali for his war crimes committed during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
