‘Extremism on rise due to absence of democracy’

DHAKA: BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Friday (June 10) alleged violence and extremism is on the rise in the country as there is no democracy here.

He further said: “Incumbent government is trying to cover-up their failures by blaming BNP for all the crimes as they could not uncover reasons of any murder”.

The BNP leader made the comment while addressing a program commemorating party’s founder Ziaur Rahman and self proclaimed “greatest” boxer Muhammad Ali at national press club in the morning.

Asking the ruling party leaders to stop the blame game, Moudud said it (extremism) must stop as it has turned into a national crisis.

“We also hate extremism. But the truth is, extremists are taking the advantage of the absence of democracy in the country,” he added.

He asked the government to conduct unbiased research to find out reasons of the rise of extremism and violence in the country.

The BNP leader also alleged that none of the judiciary, administration and election commission (EC) has independence.

Moudud also criticized the government for not showing enough honor to boxer Muhammad Ali.

BNP vice-chairman Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, another standing committee member Lt. Gen. (retd) Mahbubur Rahman, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general Moazzem Hossain Alal and Gias Uddin, the then teenager who participated in a mock fight against Muhammad Ali during his visit to Bangladesh in 1978 were present here.
