DHAKA: Opposition BNP’s standing committee sat in a policymaking meeting on Tuesday evening for a review of the country’s latest political situation to decide their course of action.

Party sources said the meeting at party chairperson’s Gulshan office would discuss whether BNP would join in the ongoing parliament session and what should be the issues to be drummed up if they returned.

“A thorough discussion might be held on BNP’s possible programmes for the anti-government movement,” said all of them.

Besides, the meeting would discuss the former ruling party’s internal crises.  

BNP secretary-general Khandaker Delwar Hossain and standing committee members are attending the meeting with its chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair.

The meeting was not held Saturday, the previous scheduled date, as most of the standing committee members were out of the capital.

One of the standing-body members told banglanews that more issues could crop up during the meeting of the party hierarchy. Those might include repression on opposition leaders and government’s ‘autocratic attitude’, public security, price hike of essentials and ‘anti-state’ deals with India.

The meeting adjorned at 11:10 pm till Thursday evening, pending decision on their return to parliament to join the ongoing session.

"Our discussions are continuing. We will sit again Thursday to take a decision," BNP secretary general Khondokar Delwar Hossain told reporters after the meeting.

In reply to a question, he said, some of the standing committee members are in favour of joining parliament while others against on grounds that "the situation has further worsened."
