Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said more than 81 percent construction works of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge project has been accomplished so far.

Moreover, 90 percent work in the construction of the main bridge is done, he said.

Quader, also the general secretary of ruling Awami League, said this while speaking to reporters after attending a virtual review meeting on the development projects.

Mentioning that around 84% of the River Training Works has been already completed, the minister said: “Approximately 4,650 metres of the bridge is now visible as 31 spans, out of the total 41 spans, have been installed.”

The first span of the Padma Bridge was installed on September 30, 2017. The 6.15-kilometre long Padma Bridge is expected to boost country’s GDP by 1.2%.

Earlier on August 26, Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said the construction of the Padma Multipurpose Bridge would be completed in 2022, missing the deadline of June 2021, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
