HC: Why bail of Papul’s wife, daughter won't be scrapped

The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking why the bail granted to convicted MP of Laxmipur-2 Kazi Shahid Islam Papul's wife MP Selina Islam and daughter Wafa Islam should not be revoked.

A virtual bench of Justice Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim issued the rule following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Khurshid Alam Khan moved for the ACC and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin represented the state in court.
Amin Uddin said, "The court has issued a rule to cancel the bail within 10 days."

Earlier the High Court directed them to surrender to the Judicial Court after MP Papul's wife and daughter applied for anticipatory bail. Upon surrendering, they were granted bail on December 17 by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayesh. The ACC then appealed to the High Court to cancel the bail order.

Earlier on November 11 last year, ACC filed a case against Shahid Islam Papul and four others, including his wife Selina and daughter for amassing illegal wealth of Tk 2.31 crore and laundering Tk 148 crore.

On January 1 this year, a Kuwait court sentenced MP Shahid Islam Papul to four years of imprisonment for money laundering and human trafficking. He is now serving his sentence in a jail in Kuwait.
