Former Bangladesh national team captain Aminul Islam Bulbul has been elected as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
The National Sports Council (NSC) issued a gazette on Friday (May 30), nominating Aminul as a BCB director. Later in the day, he was elected president through a direct vote by the board directors during a meeting.
Aminul, who served in the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) game development sector for many years, is now set to lead the country’s cricket board. He was also Bangladesh's first Test captain.
This change comes after months of political shifts in the country. In August last year, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country amid mass student protests over the quota reform issue. Following her departure, several changes occurred in state bodies, including the BCB.
After the fall of the Awami League government, another former national captain, Faruque Ahmed, was nominated by the NSC as a BCB director. He later became president through a direct vote by board directors.
However, after only nine months in office, the NSC withdrew Faruque’s directorship on May 29 following a no-confidence move by the board directors. As a result, he lost his eligibility to remain BCB president.
Aminul Islam Bulbul has now replaced him as the new head of the cricket board.
