Popular singer and former national cricketer Asif Akbar has confirmed he will contest for a director’s post in the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections, pledging to work for the overall development of cricket across the Chattogram division if elected.
In an interview with a Bangladeshi media outlet, Asif said his focus would go beyond Cumilla to include Noakhali, Feni, Chandpur and Brahmanbaria.
“Cricket talent is not lacking in Comilla or anywhere else in the division. Every district has the potential to produce new players. I believe that if separate initiatives are taken in each district, cricket can be strengthened even further,” he said.
Asif admitted that he initially had no interest in becoming a BCB councillor or joining electoral politics. However, he said he changed his mind after persistent requests from former and current players and organisers from Cumilla.
“Cricket is my passion, my love. I played the game myself and have always felt a special connection to it. I never planned to become a councillor or run in the BCB elections. But out of respect for those who urged me to take responsibility, I agreed,” he explained.
Currently on a concert tour in the United States, Asif said he remains in touch with councillors and will cast his vote remotely.
“I have 14 shows here. Two are done, 12 are still left. Singing is my profession — I cannot leave that. But I will vote via e-ballot and continue discussing plans with councillors, who are assuring me of their support,” he said.
The BCB election is scheduled for October 6. Nomination papers for director posts were distributed today and can be submitted until tomorrow. Asif confirmed he will complete the process within the deadline.
