England first European team to qualify for 2026 World Cup

England sealed their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 5–0 victory over Latvia on Tuesday, while Cristiano Ronaldo etched his name into the record books once again — though his Portugal side were held to a dramatic 2–2 draw by Hungary in Lisbon, delaying their qualification.

In Riga, Thomas Tuchel's England side delivered a dominant performance to maintain their perfect record in Group K, winning all six matches and securing top spot with two games remaining. The Three Lions now sit seven points clear of second-placed Albania, who have no path to overtake them.

Anthony Gordon opened the scoring before Harry Kane added a brace — a sharp finish followed by a well-taken penalty — to give England a 3–0 lead by halftime. Maksims Tonisevs then turned the ball into his own net, and Eberechi Eze rounded off the scoring.
“It’s rare to qualify for a World Cup this early, so the mood is very, very good,” Tuchel said after the match, as England now look ahead to December’s tournament draw.
