BCB's Preliminary Squad For Sri Lanka Tour Raised Few Eyebrows

Bangladesh Cricket team embraced catastrophic disaster of in the recently concluded tour of New Zealand. Team tigers digested comprehensive and humiliating Kiwi Wash in ODI and T20 series. Let us not revisit those moral sagging sad episodes.  We are not sure BCB has reports of the head coach, manager and the captain, an usual phenomenon in ICC member countries. Nothing has been heard and seen in media. However, BCB has announced a 21-member preliminary squad for playing two tests against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka just completed a completed a full tour of West Indies. After competing well in the T20 and ODI series losing both they gave a very account of them drawing the two matches test series against full strength West Indies team.  Bangladesh however was white washed at home against much weakened West Indies team in the test series.  A down and out Bangladesh team having very little time to recoup will leave Dhaka on 12 April for Sri Lanka. The team will be in quarantine for few days and then after some practice session and practice match among themselves would play two tests at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy.

Preliminary Squad:
Mominul Haque, Liton Das, Mohammad Mithun, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Shadman Islam, Abu Jayed, Taijul Islam, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain, Saif Hassan, Yasir Ali, Shoriful Islam, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Mukidul Islam Mugdho, Shuvagata Hom, Shohidul Islam, Quazi Nurul Hasan Sohan

The announced squad has three uncapped players Shoriful Islam, Shohidul Islam, and Mukidul Islam Mughdho and a surprise recall of veteran batting all rounder Subhagato Hom.

While Announcing them Mihazul Abebin Nannu, Chairman of BCB body concerned justified their squad formation said, "They (Shoriful, Mukidul and Shohidul) have been in our HP set up and have impressed in whichever version they have played in. Mukidul and Shohidul in particular, have caught the eye in domestic first-class this season and are future Test prospects. They all have age on their side and are talented. Shuvagata is coming back after a while but he has been a consistent performer in first-class cricket. We have considered him as a batting all-rounder but his off-break is pretty handy also and gives us an option in the spin department."

We all know star all rounder Shakibul Hasan and leading pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman has been granted leave for appearing for Kolkata Kinght Riders and Rajastah Royals in IPL 2021. Soumya Sarakar has not been peaked for his form in New Zealand although he did not perform all as bad as Liton, Mithun a few others. Nazmul Shanto had very opportunity of playing. Even Tamim and Mushfique had lean time in consideration of their star value.

We admire taking three tweeting youngsters with the team for maturing them in team environment and Sohan as right back up for Mushfique. Unless Mahmudullah is really unfit that he cannot recover even in almost two weeks from now and the second test it must be considered a big blunder to keep him out of test squad. In the ruins of New Tour, he was the only shining beacon. Whether Shakib is available or not Mahmudullah can still walk into the playing eleven in all formats for his past proven records and recent form.

How can Shubhagato Hom be better fit as a replacement for Shakib in the side? Was he a stand out batsman among all that performed in the two rounds of NCL recently played? Does one or two innings justify his inclusion in the team, why not Nasir Hossain? Why not Imrul Kayes considered as a test opener? Bangladesh looks novice against leg spin. Sri Lanka has couple of quality leg spinners. Why Bangladesh squad could not have Aminul Isalam Biplob included at least giving the batsmen good net practice? With Mehedy Miraj and Naeem Hasan in the team no question would arise using Hom’s off spin. Couple of other Batsmen in NCL performed as good as him if not better.

Bangladesh cricket team is now at rock bottom of test standing. It does not matter who plays. The fate of the team playing against any opposition even Afghanistan or Zimbabwe on tour is written on the wall. But we expect prudence from person like Minhazul Abedin. Are they acting like parrots? Is their any remote control working?

ARE WE AGAIN SENDING LAMBS FOR SLAUGHTER HOUSE?
