In the first match of the Super 12 played at the Iconic Abu Jayed Stadium Abu Dhavi two top teams who never won T20 world Cup Australia and South Africa played a low scoring thriller. 

Batting first South Africa was reduced to 7/83 by the 15th over from penetrative pace attack of Hazelwood (2/19), Starc (2/32) and guiles of Adam Zampa (2/21). Only Aiden Markram scoring 40 in 36 balls could stand firm. South Africa could reach 118/9 in allotted overs. 

All thought that it would be a cakewalk for the Aussie hungry for success after their huge drought over the past few months. But it was never to be. Protean fought tooth and nail battle with great bowling and precision fielding. They made Aussies toil for every single run. 

The match went down to the wire as the winning run came only at 19.4 overs in the nail-biting finish. Ever reliable Smith scored a patient 35. 

Marcus Stoinis (24*) and Matthew Wade (15*) adding unbeaten 40 in the 6th wicket saw the Aussies home. A good win in a close contest. Both teams however looked rusty in the low scoring derby.
