Finance Adviser begins presentation of national budget 2025–26

Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed began presenting the national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year at 3:00pm on Monday (June 2) in a live broadcast on Bangladesh Television.

The proposed budget amounts to Tk 7,90,000 crore, marking the first time in Bangladesh’s history that the size of the budget has decreased from the previous year.

The budget is being presented outside of Parliament under the interim government headed by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, which assumed office following the political changes in July.

The Advisory Council of the caretaker government has already approved the proposed budget, which is Tk 7,000 crore less than the current fiscal year’s allocation.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the budget reflects the country’s shifting socio-economic context and outlines the background of the interim government's formation, along with its economic vision.

Despite the reduced total outlay, the allocation for the non-development or operational sector has increased to Tk 5,50,000 crore, up from Tk 5,06,971 crore in the current fiscal year.

On the other hand, development expenditure has been cut to Tk 2,40,000 crore, down from Tk 2,81,453 crore.

The allocation under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) has also been reduced to Tk 2,30,000 crore, compared to Tk 2,65,000 crore in the ongoing fiscal year.

The revenue collection target has been set at Tk 4,99,000 crore, which is a 7.6 percent increase from the revised target for FY2024–25.

All budget documents and related information are available on the official websites of the Finance Division and the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
