World Teachers' Day is being observed across Bangladesh today, along with the rest of the world, through various programmes honouring educators for their contributions to shaping society.
This year, the day is celebrated under the theme “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” highlighting the importance of collaboration among teachers, schools, and education systems in transforming education.
According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated annually on October 5 since 1994 to recognise teachers worldwide. The day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which outlines standards for teachers’ rights, responsibilities, professional development, and working conditions. A complementary recommendation covering higher education teaching personnel was adopted in 1997.
World Teachers’ Day serves as both a celebration of teachers’ efforts and a reminder of the support they need to continue inspiring future generations. It is co-convened by UNESCO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International (EI).
As part of the national celebration, a reception ceremony was held this morning at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka to honour 12 outstanding teachers, selected from a shortlist of 36 candidates representing universities, colleges, schools, madrasahs, technical, and primary institutions across the country.
The Ministry of Education has instructed that the day be observed in all educational institutions nationwide, including programmes at the upazila, district, and national levels, celebrating the dedication and achievements of teachers across Bangladesh.
