DHAKA: Teachers of government colleges have postponed their work abstention following the government’s assurance in meeting their demands.

Moreover, the protesting teachers have given an ultimatum to the government to meet their demands by February.

Government teachers’ organization BCS General Education Association made the decision in an emergency meeting at its Topkhana Road office in city Wednesday afternoon (January 27).

After the meeting, association president Professor Nasreen Begum told banglanews that principal secretary of Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) has assured them over telephone to meet their demands.

Earlier at noon, Professor Nasreen Begum and association secretary general IK Selim Ullah Khandakar met education secretary Mohammad Sohrab Hossain at his office.

According to Nasreen, the education secretary has assured them to meet their demands gradually.

“We will observe the situation for one month then will go for movement if no progress seen regarding the issue.”

IK Selim Ullah Khandakar told banglanews that the government has assured them to upgrade the posts of professors.

“We will return to classes after the meeting with the principal secretary of PMO at 10:00am on Thursday (January 28),” he added.

IK Selim Ullah Khandakar further said that there are 15,000 education cadres in 270 government colleges, three aliya madrasas, 14 TT colleges and 16 commercial colleges.

All the teachers from government colleges started the three-day strike on January 26.

However, the teachers are demanding not only to sort out the discrimination in the selection grade of the 8th Pay scale, but also to upgrade the ranks and create the ‘supernumerary post’ for professors to dissolve the discrimination.
