DHAKA: The cabinet approved the draft of ‘Formalin Control Act-2013’ in a bid to stop mishandling of formalin with provisions for a maximum 10 years and minimum two years imprisonment and Tk 500,000 fine for violations.

The approval came from a regular meeting of the cabinet held at Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Monday.

Cabinet secretary M Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan briefed journalist about the decision.

He said, “Government approved the law in a bid to ensure food security by controlling the contamination in food and related substances from illegal use of formalin.”

“The draft act will be finalized after scrutinizing closely to make sure the Food Act does not clash with Formalin Control Act-2013,” he also said.
