DHAKA: Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has observed that Bangladesh would be a developed country with middle income from its current status of Least Developed Country (LDC) by 2027.
The think tank organization of the country came up with the observation at a programme of launching the Least Developed Countries Report 2013 on 49 LDCs by United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) on Wednesday.
Research Director and Head of Research at CPD Dr Fahmida Khatun presented the report at city’s CPD office.
It said that Bangladesh has already become successful to fulfill almost all the requirements to be classified as a country of middle income from the status of LDC…the country would be a middle income country by 2027 when birth rate would come down under one percent.
Mentioning that there is no alternative of stable politics to make the country as middle and high income one, CPD said the local and international investment is necessary for the country to make it middle or high income one.
Dr Fahmida Khatun said so far the trend was continuing but it might collapse if the prevailing political culture continues…political parties should compromise with each other for the sake of economic development.
She further added that in spite of the rise of per capita income, Bangladesh did not perform well in the agricultural sector.
Contribution of the agricultural sector to GDP was 30 percent only though more than 50 percent of the population was involved with the sector.
She added that International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommended that for more inclusion of women in formal economic activities for sustainable and developing economy of LDCs.
