A Lakshmipur court today (May 29) sentenced 8 people to death for shooting Chhatra League leader Mehdi Hasan Jasim to death in the district.

Judge Amina Farhin of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court handed down the verdict around 11:30.

The death-row convicts are: Mr. Mobarak Ullah (66) from Srirampur village of Dattapara Union in Sadar Upazila, Ali Hossain Bachchu (50), Hijbur Rahman Swapan (45), Kabir Hossain Ripon (30), Md Khokon, 50, son of the late Ruhul Amin (50), Md Mostafa (70), Abul Hossain (50), and Jafar Ahmed (55) from Karaitola village of Bagbari.

Seven of the convicts were present before the court during the verdict while another Hijbur Rahman Swapan is absconding, said Lakshmipur Judge Court Public Counsel (PP) Jasim Uddin.

He also said that the police filed a charge sheet against 12 accused in this case. Four of them have died. 

According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Mehdi Hasan Jasim on February 10, 2013.

Jasim's father Mafiz Ullah filed the case accusing 12 named and 10-12 unnamed persons on the following day.
